If you’re looking for a 90s rom-com fix, then Nikki Duque and Ed Martinez’s story might fill the void. Nikki and Ed became classmates back in college, but it was far from love at first sight. She was the bold, flamboyant girl in class, while he was all about business. Other than being complete opposites, Ed actually found her annoying.
Many groupworks later, they got to know more about each other. Somehow, Nikki went from annoying him to charming him. He eventually found himself asking her out. If you’ll ask Ed, he’ll say that there are some things that you won’t notice about Nikki at face value.
However, Nikki just came out of a long-term relationship, and she wasn’t ready to dive right back in another one shortly after. Maybe the timing just wasn’t right then. Fast forward to a couple of years after, Nikki’s mom, who absolutely fell in love with Ed the first time around, suddenly asked her to bring him along to one of their events. It was the invitation that defined the next four years between them.
Ed never really surprised Nikki. But on their second day of their snowboarding trip in Niseko, Japan, he decided to give her his first and biggest surprise. In the middle of the scenic snow, he went down on one knee, and told her how much he loved her with the ring. It was far from what he planned (his initial plan fell through real quick), but everything fell into place.
While the proposal was clearly the next step in their relationship, it wasn’t any less of a surprise. She never knew how happy she’d be now that she’s an engaged lady. In fact, she can’t stop looking at her ring.
Rushing the wedding ceremonies is out of the picture for the newly engaged couple, as they plan to tie the knot next year. Just like their love story, everything will always be about the right timing.
