How long have you been interested in makeup?
Just last year. Before, I really couldn’t be bothered with even a Chapstick. Marga Buenaventura from Young Star influenced me to watch a bunch of YouTube videos everyday, and then I fell into a black hole of Jaclyn Hill and NikkiTutorials makeup videos. I got interested in trying out the products because I really only started with eyeliner in College, and then I learned to do full makeup from the YouTube videos. I like the process.
How would you describe your relationship with makeup?
This is the first decision I make in the morning and it’s important to take control of the rest of my day. It’s therapeutic for me and it’s also a form of self-expression, but I don’t wear makeup solely because I want to feel good about myself. Looking good is just the bonus. For me, it’s a form of art and therapy.
What do you think are some common misconceptions about women who love using makeup?
People say that we’re maarte or insecure, but they don’t really know what goes on behind it or what our motivations are behind it. We all have different reasons and I think it’s shallow to judge others by the way they look in the first place. Makeup is just another layer that you have to go through to get to know a person. It’s better to just go straight in being interested with the personality and not just the looks.
What’s the hardest part of your makeup routine?
The hardest part is when I try to use liquid lipstick, because there’s so much to do like you line your lips and all. I guess it’s also therapeutic because there are so many steps but just trying to get the lines right is something I can’t do. Maybe I’m just an eye person and I like to blend the colors. Removing liquid lipstick is also difficult like for the Kylie Lipkit, you need an oil-based product to take it off. I’m very low-maintenance, I just use wipes and Cetaphil.
On the other hand, what is the best makeup-related compliment you’ve ever received?
I like it when people tell me that my eye shadow is blended really well, or if my eyeliner is “on fleek” because this took me years of practice. I like it when people compliment the details because I see this as art, so, when I blend it really well it’s also an accomplishment for me.
